In a world where our smartphones do so much, it makes sense to use them to their full capacity for exercise and fitness, and more and more of us are opting to use our smartphones to help us stay healthy and active. The amount of fitness apps out there is endless, so much so that the App Store has its own ‘Health & Fitness’ category and there are reportedly 320,000 health and fitness apps out there!
There are some great exercise and fitness apps available which offer an array of features – from tracking movement and counting calories to providing exercise workouts. There’s something for everyone. In light of this, we’ve selected our top five exercise and fitness apps to help you stay healthy, active and to give you that extra bit of motivation.
MyFitnessPal offers an array of health features. The app is a diet tracker, calorie counter and also an exercise motivator. The app personalises your goals based on your body type and the food you’re eating.
One of the best features in Under Armour’s app is the detail of their database. There are approximately five million foods in their database for you to choose from, so rather than just typing in the generic food you’re eating, you can be specific and pick your exact meal and where you bought it.
This improves the app’s accuracy and allows you to determine how many calories you’re taking in and then burning off. A great app if you want to keep an eye on what you’re eating!
Nike Training Club
Nike Training Club is the perfect app for fitness lovers who want to mix up their training sessions with a variety of options in their workouts. From seeing what workouts you do, the app personalises plans that adapt to your specific individual needs. So don’t worry if you miss a day, the app will help get you back on track. But beware if you hit a peak – Nike Training Club will push you that bit harder!
All of your extra activities count too – so even if you play a bit of five-a-side football, the more you enter in the app, the smarter the app becomes at balancing your fitness routine.
Strava: Run & Ride Training
Strava is a great app for tracking your running and cycling activities. The app records your distance, running speed, time and the course you’ve taken. One of the unique features of Strava is that you can push yourself with monthly challenges to compete with others around the globe.
The app is compatible with GPS watches and most bike computers. You can share your results easily with your friends and followers and, as well as tracking and recording your workout, there are paid-for membership options in which you can get customisable training and workout plans and live feedback to help you perform better, or share your location for a safer workout.
Strava doesn’t stop with running or cycling – you can track a whole range of sports through this app – swimming, yoga and surfing to name a few – so it’s worth checking out Strava to help you reach your goals, no matter the sport.

Yoga Wake Up
The idea with this app is to replace a bad habit with a new healthy one. Yoga Wake Up starts your day right by setting a yoga wake up time with your choice of soothing audio advising you how to start your day relaxed and at ease, followed by a short sequence of yoga poses. The idea behind the app is to make your mind and muscles feel much more awake than usual.
The great thing about this app is that you can vary the time with different audio voices so if you don’t always have the time for a 15 minute yoga wake up, you can vary your wake up with a shorter different yoga wake up that will help you loosen up to ease you through the day.
Yoga Wake Up is a refreshingly unique app to get you in the right mind and physical shape for your day ahead.
