For the next ‘Day in the life at motive8’ series, we caught up with motive8’s Pool and Spa Maintenance Manager, Charlie King.
Charlie is responsible for the daily management of the Pool and Spa maintenance division and has been with the business since January 2021. Read on to find out what taking on a management position has meant to Charlie, and why motive8 has been one of the best teams he’s ever worked with:
Performing in a timely and professional manner
My role involves the scheduling and daily management of the Pool and Spa technicians, as well as stock acquisition. I support with creating contracts for potential clients, visiting gym and spa sites to give professional advice and ensuring any reactive works are performed in a timely and professional manner.
Prioritising jobs based on their importance and severity
My day starts early, meeting the technicians in the morning to go over the day’s schedule with them. Here I’ll make sure they are prepared with all information needed and ensure they have the correct supplies for the day. I then begin to work through emails and messages, using this time to prioritise jobs based on their importance and severity.
Once I have prioritised the day’s tasks, I spend some time contacting specialist contractors and suppliers to keep on top of active jobs, whilst also booking in any newly required ones. I am the point of call for any reactive issues or queries, so assigning a technician to resolve these as soon as possible is important, while also acquiring any parts/chemicals needed for the job. My day usually finishes by adjusting the weeks schedule based on the events of the day, and sending off any emails that will require a continuation the following day.
Flexibility and support to develop
The part I most enjoy about working at motive8 has been the flexibility and support to develop. Having advanced into a management role soon after joining motive8, I have had the full support of the team, ensuring I have been able to perform all my new duties.
Developing professional relationships and contacts within the industry
One of my favourite parts of the role since working at motive8 has been the opportunity to visit potential new clients and existing sites outside of PPM time. This gives me some time out of the office to develop professional relationships and contacts within the industry. It also gives me a chance to encounter new sites and equipment which may be newer to the industry, which in turn expands my knowledge base.

Taking a step back from the day to day has meant I am able to focus on the larger picture
Having mentioned previously, I moved into a management role relatively soon after starting with the company. Moving into this role has really expanded my development into a completely new style of role. Taking a step back from the day to day jobs has meant I am able to focus on the larger picture and gain an understanding of how the company is run. This has lead me to further develop my skills to ensure the best service is provided to both our clients and the company itself.
Each and every person at motive8 wants you to achieve your goals
The motive8 team have been one of the best teams to work with! The general atmosphere in the office and on the road is collaborative – each and every person wants you to achieve your goals, which means throughout the day you know that you can rely on someone to listen and have their full support when you encounter more difficult aspects of the work day.
Working at motive8 has provided invaluable skills in both work and life
Working at motive8 has given me the opportunity to develop my career at a rate much faster than what I thought possible. It has given me invaluable skills in both work and life, allowing me to develop in my personal life as well.
