In the fourth in our series of ‘Meet the Experts’ interviews with the motive8 team, we spoke to Jenny Cromack, Director at motive8.
Jenny is a leading expert in personal training and service delivery.
She has years of experience using exercise to change body shape, improve endurance and boost wellbeing. She is also a keen duathlete and triathlete who has represented Great Britain for her age group.
We asked Jenny about her day-to-day work at motive8, personal training trends and the future direction of the gym and leisure industry.
Exercise trends will continue to focus on health and wellbeing
Over the last 10 years, people’s mindset and motivation to exercise has changed massively.
In the past, most people’s reasons for exercising and taking part in personal training sessions were aesthetically driven. Most client goals were centred around being a particular weight, dress or waist size.
These days people understand they need to look after their health and wellbeing, both physically and mentally, rather than just conform to look a certain way.
Now, there is more emphasis on simply being fitter, healthier and more active.
I love the fact that motive8 can have a huge impact on people’s lives
My core expertise is in personal training and service delivery.
Before becoming a Director at motive8 I had my own personal training company and was always passionate about the level of support I gave to my clients. I don’t deliver as many personal training sessions myself these days, but I am still hugely passionate about delivering amazing results with our personal training clients. I’m equally passionate about the delivery of first-class customer service; it’s hugely important to us as a company that every customer, whether it’s a resident using one of our gym facilities, an estate management company or a personal training client, receives the highest level of customer service. The simplicity of the gym and leisure industry is that we can change someone’s day immediately from a ‘bad day’ to a ‘great day’ just by delivering great customer service.
There are exciting leisure developments in the North of England
I live in the North of England, and for a long time London has been at the forefront of developing residential amenity space, including fitness and leisure facilities.
I am excited about what’s going on around the country now. There are innovative developments, such as Deansgate Square in Manchester, which are really changing the gym and leisure landscape in the North of England. It’s an amazing time for motive8 to be involved in such projects.
I’m also proud to have been running the motive8 Personal Training studio in Leeds for over 10 years now. It only feels like yesterday that Nick Sadler and I went to look at the space. Time flies when you’re having fun.
We also opened our flagship commercial gym in York, Supersonic Fitness, in 2018. Due to Covid, it hasn’t been the most straightforward start, but Supersonic is really flying now and I’m super excited to see what else we can achieve there.
Community spaces will become an important part of gyms and residential amenities
The pandemic caused a shift to virtual training sessions. Whilst I understand the convenience of online classes, I still think people crave interaction, especially when it comes to fitness classes. Exercise time is such a great opportunity for people to come together.
In the first part of 2022, we have seen a greater uptake in our instructor-led classes than ever before. I think this trend will lead to more emphasis on creating ‘communities’ within fitness spaces and residential amenities.
An on-site gym is now a standard expectation within most residential developments, but we are also seeing more and more developers adding studio space for group fitness to contribute to the on-site community vibe.
The pandemic has driven change but also shown what we miss
The pandemic threw up many challenges for the gym and leisure industry, and we had to work quickly and collaboratively to find solutions.
Many residential facilities wanted to introduce a booking system for managing capacity and controlling access to unmanned residential gyms. But the functionality of the fitness products on the market were too complex or too expensive.
So, we worked with our developers to enhance the functionality of our own booking system and provide an affordable and effective solution for our clients. I’ve really enjoyed the change in my role becoming more involved in developing the motive8 booking system.
Like many people, the last couple of years has taught me the importance of spending time with family and friends. motive8 is a great company to work for, and there is a real fun and family feel at work.
What I’m really looking forward to now is seeing motive8 continue to flourish whilst spending more time with my husband and little boy. I’m also looking forward to going on holiday again and enjoying some sunshine!
